Newsletter 29

Hello all and welcome. In this weeks newsletter I’m excited to attend my first book launch of my first book.  Happening on Wednesday, March 18th and I hope you can make it. I spend time with McCoy Tyner’s music and share some other things that I found interesting.

  1. International Women’s Day took place around the world Sunday, March 8th and while I was teaching karate I made sure to let the students know. I usually divide the class into groups and pick team leaders, this class, I had each team with a female leader in honour of the day.  “An equal world is an enabled world” a sentiment I completely agree with.
  2. As mentioned my book launch is proceeding, I am prepared to read my book Samba on a Snowy Day a couple of times. Hope to sell a few copies and sign them too. I have ordered some memorabilia for the occasion, Samba on a Snowy Day mugs and t-shirts.

3. Spring officially arrives March 20th and Canada Blooms is a good indicator that spring has really arrived. Canada Blooms opens this weekend and runs until March 22nd.

March Break

March Break is starting, officially running from the 16th to the 20th, (Ontario to close all publicly funded schools until April 5th) will this be a staycation for you? Or are you venturing out into the great beyond? I am sticking around, mostly due to my book launch, but I have plans to get out and about. The wilderness of northern Ontario beckons and I am considering a bed and breakfast in the Algonquin Park area. I also want to check out a Buddhist Temple, something to compliment my mindfulness practice.

4. I am listening to McCoy Tyner (1938-2020) who passed this week at the age of 81. An incredible pianist who came to prominence playing in the groups led by John Coltrane, . My guilty listening pleasures include, A Love Supreme, Giant Steps, Coltrane “Live” At The Village Vanguard and McCoy Tyner Trio, Infinity featuring Michael Brecker (1949-2007). A report I wrote on a McCoy Tyner concert from 2006, and from another perspective, co-writer David Fujino’s take on the same concert, courtesy of  The Live Music Report.

Dr. Barry Harris

A story that caught my eye about another jazz legend, this one, the living legend, Dr. Barry Harris. I have been extremely fortunate to meet and speak with many of the jazz greats. Dr. Harris is one such musician that I spent some time with. A great musician and a great person, this article just goes to show you the incredible passion that he has for the music.

5. In my search through archives on reports/reviews I may have published on McCoy Tyner, I found the one featured by David K. Fujino (1945-2017). I ordered David’s book Air Pressure,  a book of poetry and I am looking forward to reconnecting with him through his words.

I am currently reading Joanne Harris’ Chocolat and loving it, her style is refreshing. I really wanted to say delectable, or delicious, but that sounds too mushy.

I saw the movie “Chocolat” way back when, but I never read the book, it’s so true how books are usually better than the movies that spawn them. And this movie is truly magical.

Thanks for reading. If you like what you’ve read forward this to someone you think will enjoy it. Remember to check out my book, Samba on a Snowy Day available at your favourite book store (if not – please ask them to get it ASAP). A fun children’s book for children to read to adults or the other way around. I hope to see you at my book launch where you’ll get to hear me read the book out loud.
