Earth Week 2020, April 20 – 26
The theme for Earth Day 2020, Wednesday April 22nd, is climate action. The enormous challenge — but also the vast opportunities — of action on climate change have distinguished the issue as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary.
Hello all, a warm welcome to this weeks newsletter. This weeks focus is on our Universe and home, planet Earth. Thursday the 23rd is World Reading Day and I share some tips on how to get free reads. I’ll also share a few more things that interested me this week while in self-isolation.
1. With so many children staying at home finding ways to keep them interested, active and hopeful has become a challenge for some parents. Inspire kids to protect our planet and to take care of each other. Planet Protector Academy (Home Edition) is sharing a program made for kids staying at home.The programming is ideal for children ages 6 to 11. It incorporates music, theatre and humour to empower children to make a difference in protecting the planet.
Children become virtual superheroes as Apprentice Planet Protectors and learn how to get involved in the community through collaborative models.
Sessions are one hour each, Monday to Thursdays (10 to 11 Pacific time) and start (Monday, April 20) to kick off Earth Week. Sign up the kids in your life now to get in on the fun.
2. World Book Day also known as World Book and International Day of the Book took place on April 23rd. Amazon Books was offering some excellent books for free. I took advantage of a few books, Along The Tapòs by Fernando Vilela, translated by Daniel Hahn. This is a very cool children’s book about rescuing a pet turtle on the Amazon River. The illustrations are fantastic, transporting you directly to the Amazon jungle of Brazil.
Another of my choices, from China, Lu Yao’s Life. My other choice, Your Perfect Year by Charlotte Lucas, this one interested me because of the novels description. “A man consumed by a meaningless life is going to do something he’s never considered doing before. He’s going to enjoy the day… Someone has left a leather-bound day planner with the handwritten title Your Perfect Year for him to find and so sets in motion a quest to find the owner.

3. For your viewing pleasure this week so many great documentaries on Hot Docs and all for free if you team up with CBC Gems.
I signed up for a free account and not only do I get to see the Hot Docs programs but I can see the regular streaming programs as well. CBC has more than a couple of great shows, however two that I enjoy are, Working Moms and Kim’s Convenience.
4. Listening to your favourite musicians has never been easier during their stay at Home concerts. I really enjoyed Hozier doing his thing from home with his bandmate Alex Ryan. I also enjoyed checking out Nora Jones as she performed some of her mini concerts.
Global Citizen and WHO presented; One World: Together At Home Special to Celebrate COVID-19 Workers. The concert was streamed live, 8 hours of music for your listening pleasure, and raising over 100 million for WHO.
5.) Earth Day and the things we can accomplish to help protect the only planet we have. The featured image, flowers I spotted on one of my walks this week.

A list of just some of the awesome things you can do to help out. Plant something – Ride your bike – Walk to the store – Let your voice be heard – Buy reusable bags – Use refillable water bottles – Conserve water at home.
