November 28 . Issue 186

The best-laid plans can never be set in stone; at best, they are formed of sand and washed away by an unexpected rain.

Hello and welcome to my journal—a place where I share what’s been happening in my writer’s life. Here are five highlights from November: moments that kept me busy, brought me joy, or gave me a sense of accomplishment. The featured photo is from the recent Indie Author Day event at Richmond Hill Public Library.

1. Bookish Events & A Market Surprise

November brought some wonderful bookish events, but the standout was a craft market at the Leisure Time Club in Collingwood, Ontario. This full-day event connected me with so many interested readers and turned out to be my best sales event this year.

Thank you to all the wonderful folks who picked up a copy of one of my books—your support means the world to me. I hope you’ll reach out or leave a review if you enjoyed what you read.

2. Illustrations in Progress

My newest book is awaiting the completion of its illustrations, and we’re halfway there! This isn’t something you can rush—illustrators tend toward perfectionism, and Joshua Miller is no exception. I’m perfectly fine with that.

At one event this month at Richmond Hill Public Library, I shared a black-and-white illustration from the book: Samba in Italy, a Halloween-inspired panel that left the kids thoroughly impressed.

3. Next Up: The Link Winter Market

My next event is The Link Winter Market in Sutton, Ontario, on Sunday, December 7, 2025. I’ll be joined by fellow authors from the Writers Community of York Region, a group I’m proud to belong to. All my books will be available at special holiday pricing—signed by yours truly, if you’d like!

4. Audio Book Premiere

When I haven’t been at events, I’ve been working hard to complete my premiere audiobook. I’m publishing it with Audible, and it will be Book 1 in the Blue Mountain series: Scratchy the Squirrel: A Time for Friends. This project is nearing completion, and I can’t wait to share it with you. Stay tuned for a sample!

5. Plans, Plans, and More Plans (Sort Of)

I’m a planner by nature—not that I can’t be spontaneous, but I do like having a roadmap, especially when it comes to travel. My winter escape from Canada to Costa Rica had been mostly planned, and I was particularly excited about spending time in a cloud forest: a cozy cabin with a river running through the property. And views similar to this one of the Sleeping Man Mountain. My photo of 2024 was taken from the La Fortuna area.

Then came a message from the host—apologies, but the current tenants wanted to extend their stay. Oh well, so much for that plan!

Not to be discouraged, I found another place right on Lake Arenal. This will be my view every morning:

Perhaps the universe is sending me a message.
