The Writer’s Journey: Spring Newsletter 2025

The pen is mightier than the sword…although I’m lucky to be able to wield both!

Hello and welcome to my monthly journal, fellow travelers! Each month, I open my writer’s journal to share five special points of interest—moments that have sparked joy, ignited creativity, or made me pause in wonder. Whether you’re here for the writing adventures, martial arts insights, or tales from the Blue Mountains, I’m glad you’ve joined me.

1.  “The pen is mightier than the sword… there is wisdom in both.” The WCYR Writers Conference Experience

The energy at the Writers’ Community of York Region conference was electric. Setting up my first vendor table at my first WCYR writers conference felt great. This was also the first event of the new year for me. like stepping into a new chapter of my writing journey.  Between arranging books and chatting with fellow authors and attendees. I made connections that will last well beyond the conference walls.

Some of those meetings and connections ultimately led to book sales, which is always a plus.

The conference sessions opened my eyes to new possibilities in the publishing industry. The great Pantser versus Plotter debate reminded me there’s no single “right” way to write. Perhaps most intriguing was the discussion about using different pen names for various genres—a strategy I’m now considering and reconsidering as I move forward with future projects.

2. Finding Balance in Two Arts

Life has a beautiful way of weaving together our passions. When in the city, I find joy teaching at the karate dojo, sharing techniques with eager students who remind me of my own early days in martial arts. Here in the Blue Mountains, I’ve discovered a new sword style that challenges and inspires me.

These dual pursuits—writing and martial arts—feed each other in unexpected ways. The discipline of the sword informs the precision of my prose, while the creativity of writing brings a fresh perspective to my martial practice.

A great article in the local online news magazine caught my attention and led to my involvement. Collingwood Today: Pair builds traditional Japanese training culture.

3. The Road Ahead: Event Planning

My calendar is filling with literary events, each one promising new opportunities to connect with readers. My next event is the Aurora Street Festival on Sunday, June 1st. The main street (Yonge Street) in the town of Aurora is closed from 10 AM until 5 PM, and some one hundred thousand people take to the street. I will be there wth a small group of writers from the Writers Community of York Region (WCYR). Come out and enjoy the event, pick up some books, or browse the over 500 vendors on site.

Beyond the obvious hope for sales, these gatherings offer something far more valuable: genuine connections with those who share my passion for stories. There’s nothing quite like watching someone’s eyes light up as they discover a new book or hearing how a story touched their life. These moments remind me why I write.

And if you can’t make that event, my next event is on Saturday, June 14, at the WCYR Bookshelf as part of the Newmarket Farmers’ Market. THE BOOKSHELF is a fantastic not-for-profit event that works to unite readers with authors and provide fun reading-related craft items. This promises to be a festive atmosphere where readers can meet their next favourite author.

4. Manuscript Progress and Publishing Dreams

The journey of bringing a book to life requires more than just words on paper. I’m excited to announce a new approach to funding my upcoming writing projects: a membership program! There are two key reasons behind this decision. First, it allows me to step aside from grant applications, freeing up those resources for emerging writers who are just beginning their careers. Second, I know many of you are eager to see my new work, and this provides a direct way for you to be involved. By becoming a member, you’ll gain exclusive access to a range of exciting content, including: *   Early access to e-books *   Sneak peeks at cover designs.

*   A first look at illustrations *   And other special benefits!

I’ll admit, I initially hesitated to launch a membership program. I worried it might be perceived as simply “asking for money.” However, I’ve come to realize that it’s much more than that. It’s about building a sustainable creative business that benefits both you and me.

Think of it as a value-for-value exchange. Your monthly contribution directly supports the creation of new books and content, while you receive exclusive access and a deeper connection to my work. This model allows me to invest in my writing, potentially expanding my team, and bringing even more ambitious ideas to life.

I’ve chosen Patreon as the platform for this new venture, and I’m incredibly excited about the possibilities it unlocks.

I invite you to join me on this journey! You can become a free member to stay updated, or choose a monthly contribution level to unlock all the bonus benefits.

Thank you for your continued support. I’m excited to share my new projects with you.

5. The Marketing Adventure

Who knew that being an author meant becoming a marketing specialist too? Amazon’s indie publishing world is vast and complex, but I’m learning to navigate it with growing confidence. Newsletters, social media, promotions—each element adds a new dimension to the writing life. While marketing isn’t every author’s favorite task, I’m discovering it’s another form of storytelling. We’re not just selling books; we’re sharing our passion for stories with the world.

As spring blossoms in the Blue Mountains, I’m excited to share more adventures, both written and lived. Whether you’re a fellow writer, a martial artist, or simply someone who loves a good story, I hope you’ll join me on this journey.

Thank you for reading. If you know of someone who may be interested in this Monthly Journal, please share. Be sure to check out my newest book, Life on the Beaver River, an early reader chapter book.  All my books are readily available online through your favorite bookstores.

Be well, stay safe, and keep reading and writing.
