Hello all! I am back from my up north adventure. Northern Ontario is really quite beautiful in the summer. I managed to go for a therapeutic swim every day, mostly during the early morning, there is nothing quite like it after a strenuous work out.

I visited an outdoor museum aptly named The Tree Museum and as fall is fast approaching, I’m planning a return visit to take in the art amongst the trees, in falls full colour spectrum.

Some things that interested me this week, and I hope will be of interest to you too.

Here are my five items, links or suggestions that should get you some inspiration.

  1. A tree museum? Who could come up with that idea. It’s the brain child of Founder and sponsor: EJ Lightman. Curators: EJ Lightman and Anne O’Callaghan. With internet services restored I found this information at their home on the web,  https://www.thetreemuseum.ca/ “An Outdoor Art Gallery of Site Specific Installations”
  2. Along the same train of thought, nature, I have picked up on Greta Thunberg and her strike for climate change. Ms. Thunberg is a 16 year old who started a protest movement. Since December, teenagers across Germany inspired by the 16-year-old Thunberg’s climate fight have been marching weekly instead of sitting in classes. I’m all in, and looking for ways to contribute my time and effort. Greenpeace has some advice for the September 27th Strike For Climate Change here: https://www.greenpeace.org/canada
  3. A musician who inspired me to write about music, Wayne Shorter, check out my review of one of his recent concerts https://torontomusicreport.com/featured/wayne-shorter-quartet-live-in-concert/   and another musician whom I admire for her incredible talent, Esperanza Spalding http://www.esperanzaspalding.com/ are working together to create a new opera, something that promises to be very special, http://www.octopustheatricals.com/iphigenia I must get tickets to this.
  4. My reading continues with an author I recently discovered, Alexander McCall Smith and another series he has penned. The Sunday Philosophy Club, set in Edinburgh, Scotland and featuring the protagonist Isabel Dalhousie. I am thoroughly enjoying this book and considering a visit to Edinburgh.
  5. Karate classes have started, I’m teaching children and adults at www.smadojo Shingikan Dojo in Maple, On. I’m also instructing children at a community centre in the city of Markham, as well as one in the town of Stouffville.

Thanks for reading. If you like what you’ve read forward this to someone you think will enjoy it.

Newsletter #3

Hello all! I am up in northern Ontario this week (Aug. 30th/19) taking in the flora and the fauna. My network services are at basic level. The phone works and that’s only on a clear day. On rare occasions I go into town and I log on to free wifi. My newsletter for this week might be a little late getting to you. Some things that interested me this week, and I hope will be of interest to you too.

Here are my five items, links or suggestions that should get you some inspiration.

  1. Turtles, how to identify Ontario turtles. Were you aware that turtles are endangered? I recently saw a snapping turtle being assisted by a conscientious driver on one of the rural roads up this way. The driver had pulled over in a rather unsafe manner. His car was blocking one of the lanes. I stopped a ways behind and put on my four way flashers to warn others. The good samaritan was trying to get a turtle to cross the road faster. Between the two of us we guided the turtle to the bush on the other side of the road. https://cottagelife.com/outdoors/how-to-identify-ontarios-8-species-of-turtles/
  2. Music in the wilderness, when not listening to the call of the wild, loons, owls, frogs and crickets, I listen to the latest recording by Luis Muńoz with Lois Mahalia, The Infinite Dream. Muńoz, a percussionist, composer and band leader, has released an exquisite recording. Beautifully textured, latin tinged melodies with the pleasing vocals of Mahalia. www.luismunoz.net
  3. Books from small town classic stores, like AlleyCats Music in Orillia.  Hidden away in a dusty pile of books, I found an early edition Jonathan Livingston Seagull hard cover book. A story by Richard Bach with photographs by Russell Munson, published by Turnstone Press London. This book was on a reading list given to me by one of my karate teachers. A delightful little book about flight, freedom and being true to yourself. It’s the third copy I have owned, gifting the previous copies to deserving souls.
  4. Preparations are underway for a new and exciting season of karate and other martial arts. I never stop my practice, I may not practice certain forms for some time and then I find a desire to review them. Such is the case with a basic form named 27 movements (niju hichi waza). I start instructing karate at a new dojo in September and I plan to introduce this form as it has 14 of the basic karate techniques that are most common to all Japanese karate styles, all done in one stance, the iron horse stance (kiba dachi). If you are in the neighbour hood come by and say hello www.smadojo.com Shingikan Dojo in Vaughan, On.
  5. My pick for entertainment, gather up your fire wood, make or buy a fire pit and sit under the stars and enjoy a campfire. Make sure to be safe, pay attention to open fire warnings and always have a bucket of water or sand available.

Newsletter #2

Hello all! Some things that interested me this week, and may interest you too.

Only five items, links or suggestions that will be able to get you some inspiration.

Here are some links to some sites I like, sites that inspire me, make me want to read or are just plain interesting.

  1. Music is a very big part of my life, I listen to music frequently. I attend live shows, concerts, clubs and even festivals. Most recently, August, 18th to be exact,  I attended the Markham Jazz Festival and checked out a few good groups. One that really caught my attention and made me want to move and tap my foot, Bywater Call. I really enjoyed the band, the fact that they have a saxophone and a trumpet player is a bonus. The lead vocalist, Meghan Parnell has a wonderful voice. Her energy, her passion and her beautiful, powerful voice are captivating. Check the band out here, bywatercall.com. Their debut CD is expected out in the fall of 2019.
  2. Transformational coaching! Have you heard of that? I recently attended a coaching conference and I was impressed with speaker Dr. Jean Coté. I summarized his talk, you can check out a webinar here, Dr.Cotè on youtube.com or check my blog – paulyanuziello.com, check out my summary report of Dr. Coté’s talk at the coaches conference.
  3. Last week I mentioned a book I was reading about a master gardener, today I invite you to check out some incredible gardens, swing over to Japan and view some beautiful gardens, go to japan-guide.
  4. Last week I mentioned classic literature and this week I found a provider of the classics for free. Gutenburg.org, locates classics that have gone into the public domain and they make them available on Kindle or other electronic readers. I downloaded to my kindle reader  one of my favourite children’s authors Thornton Burgess, auth of the Bed-Time Storybooks a series of books with titles like Sammy Jay and Reddy Fox. Some of these titles have gone into the public domain and this awesome site is allowing free downloads of these classics. Not only children’s literature, but classics in many genre, I downloaded a couple of books by another of my favourite authors, P. G. Wodehouse. You can browse the bookshelf here: https://www.gutenberg.org
  5. My pick for entertainment, get out and enjoy summer. Get to the beach, or get to the water. Better yet, get on the water. I picked up a deal on a canoe and I’m trying it out on Lake Muskoka, near the town of Gravenhurst, Ontario. I found some  secluded rivers and I’m being entertained by nature.
