Happy New Year 2021

“Hope
Smiles from the threshold of the year to come,
Whispering ‘it will be happier’…”
― Alfred Lord Tennyson (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892)

Welcome to another year. And hoping this year is far better than the one we say adios to. This week I share with you 5 things that I found interesting and I hope you may find some interest in as well.

1. The big news for me this week, my book Samba in Brazil is complete and has been uploaded to the printers.

Pre-orders are available through Amazon.com. We have a limited number of Samba in Brazil books available and they are at a special pre-order price, but only for a limited time. The official release date is February 21, 2021.

2. The joy of Christmas lingers in the hearts of many people, even though lots of them were doing a virtual Christmas. This was a first for me, not celebrating with my family and friends, and it brought back memories of my childhood Christmas.

3. I started a new book, a fantasy series by Lian Hearn, Grass For His Pillow. A book where the swords have names. My kind of book.

There are a couple of books I read over and over again. One of them is The Beloved, Reflections on the Path of the Heart by Kahil Gibran and the other, The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi.

I always seem to get something new out of these books on each reading. “In all paths, there are some things which can be learned only as one delves deeper and deeper.” Musashi

4. This Christmas eve I spent time watching ballet, “The Nutcracker” a Christmas tradition in our family.

My Christmas present to my wife Nina, which was purchased way before lockdown, a Bobby McFerrin concert at Koerner Hall, in Toronto. Unfortunately, it has been cancelled, rescheduled to this time next year. “Don’t Worry, Be Happy!” McFerrin

5. New Year’s Eve for me has usually been about dining out and celebrating the arrival of a new year in a quiet, peaceful and loving manner.

This year we are locked down and television will be the entertainment of choice. We watched a fun movie, a comedy and we ordered take-out from one of our fave Japanese restaurants, complemented with a fantastic pinot grigio wine.

Thank you for reading. If you think someone would enjoy the newsletter please share it with them. If you are looking for a fun children’s book check out one of my books. Samba on a Snowy Day or my new book, Samba in Brazil.

Stay safe, stay well, stay strong and keep going. Happy New Year!

Hello all!

Some things that interested me this week, and I hope will be of interest to you too.

Here are my five items, links or suggestions that should get you some inspiration and information.

Newsletter 9

1. Coming to Ontario, Canada, the city of Mississauga specifically is a show by the one and only Dr. Seuss. Well the estate, holders of the torch for all things Dr. Seuss – Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. The LA Times had this to say, Dr.-Seuss-Exhibition-Tour. For your chance to get out and see the show information and tickets ExperienceSeuss.com

2. International Festival of Authors, the festival runs from October 24th – November 3rd. I plan to check out a few things, but as I’m into self-publishing, I am very interested in this event: The Small Press Market.

3. My Heart Fills With Happiness – a cool book, a different language, it’s in English and Plains Cree, with wonderful illustrations and it is a fantastic idea. Over 550,000 Grade One students will receive a copy of the book.

This children’s book by Monique Grey Smith with Illustrations by Julie Flett is available as a part of the TD Grade One Book Giveaway and The Canadian Children’s Book Centre.

4. I was inspired by the Flamenco Legends show that I took in last week and it had me looking through a record collection that I inherited from my mother.

My mother, Marguerite Yanuziello, modelling a Mexican Folk Dance Costume

I was looking for Flamenco legends who I had grown up listening to.

5. For some entertaining screen time, I recommend the Netflix series Magical Andes,  simply fascinating. The longest mountain range in the world cutting South America in two, from north to south, with seven countries – Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela covered. The continent’s most magnificent natural wonder stretches over 7,500km.

Hello all!

Some things that interested me this week, and I hope will be of interest to you too.

Here are my five items, links or suggestions that should get you some inspiration and information.

  1. Last week I mentioned that I was inspired by the drumming of Ginger Baker. I started drum lessons  when I was ten years old. My mother forced all of us, me and my two brothers, to take some kind of lessons in the arts. I started with accordion, that lasted two lessons, I took Flamenco dance lessons, I liked that, but not dance, the percussion. I took drumming, yes that was for me, I loved banging on things. I was in a few garage/basement bands and then I got invited to sit in with a fantastic guitarist in my neighbourhood, Ed McDonald. I was fourteen years old and along with our bass player of the time, Don Alain, we practiced a lot. When I was fifteen I was playing in clubs with the band,  now named, Snowaxe.  I was in this band for along time. About eleven years and in that time we went through numerous bass players, and on looking back, I can say there were some good times. To get a good idea of what it was like, check out the movie This Is Spinal Tap, a movie that always makes me laugh.
  2. This week I took in a show entitled, The Paco deLucia Project at the George Weston Recital Hall. A fantastic show with great Flamenco guitar, dance singing and percussion. latinjazznet.com Flamenco Legends. To get a good idea of the inspiration for the group, listen to the master Paco diLucia performing with his septet live in Germany. Paco diLucia Live.
  3. Speaking of  shows, the Tony award winning show Hamilton, is on its way to Toronto.  Toronto’s  Ed Mirvish Theatre will play host to Hamilton this February with tickets going on sale October 28th.  HamiltonEdMirvishTheatre
  4. I have some kids in my karate class who have been victims of bullying. They haven’t said anything to me about it. It’s the parents who have mentioned it.  We’re talking young kids, seven and eight years old. As a karate teacher you walk a thin line – you can’t promote violence, we teach them to refrain from violent behaviour. You can teach them about self defence, you can give them the guidelines to stand up for themselves. To not be afraid to talk to adults about their problems. Anti bullying in Canada, the policy, the procedures and the problems. What you can do is inform all the students about how to carry yourself, what is good behaviour, and not acceptable behaviour. There are some great guidelines here. Canada Guide To Anti Bullying. Bullying prevention in schools by Prev Net, Promoting Relationships & Eliminating Violence Network – Canada’s authority on research and resources for bullying prevention. A great resource,
    prevnet.ca bullying-prevention-facts-and-tools-for-schools
  5. The dance legend Alicia Alonso passed away this week, she was 98. The New York Times has some wonderful information on her outstanding achievements nytimes alicia-alonso. I learned about the inspirational Ms. Alonso from my mother who was a professional ballerina and dance master and like Ms. Alonso,  continued teaching and training, well into her 70’s.
